Belaz is a finalist for the 2014 Swedish Steel Prize for successfully developing the world’s largest dump truck, which features a steerable axle and body components made of high-strength steel. The Belaz 75710 dump truck has a payload of 450 tonnes, which reduces the environmental impact per load by 25%. It can operate in temperatures as low as -60°C and at nearly 5000 meters above sea level.
To achieve such a high capacity, high-strength steel was used in the ᴍᴀɴufacture of the swivel carriage, a component of the truck suspension system that connects the axle and the frame with a slewing bearing. When we started discussing the movable suspension, we saw that high-strength steel was the best choice, said Vladimir Zagorsky, Chief of called for four tires in both the front and rear, as well as four-wheel drive, which required a new suspension solution.
The following are the reasons why the Swedish Steel Prize Jury chose Belaz as a finalist for the 2014 Swedish Steel Prize: Belaz created the world’s largest dump truck by combining advanced high-strength steel with a Uɴɪqᴜᴇ design, which has significant advantages in terms of productivity and fuel economy. To reduce thickness while still handling extreme axle loads, Weldox high-strength structural steel is used in the axle suspension. The combination of equal load distribution on the front and rear wheels and a low center of gravity has resulted in increased stability and safety. In addition, using a Hardox wear plate in the body reduces abrasive wear and impact dents.
The Swedish Steel Prize was founded in 1999 to inspire and raise awareness about the use of high-strength steel in the development of lighter, safer, and more sustainable products. Jorg Jeschke was the trophy winner. The award ceremony is part of a three-day event in which 600 international representatives from the global ᴍᴀɴufacturing and steel industries will attend seminars and tour SSAB.
